Passenger traffic will be redirected via the pass whenever possible, while heavy goods vehicles (>3.5 tons) will be stopped 30 minutes before the tunnel's closure at both the north and south entrances.
Every year, the Gotthard Tunnel is closed in March/April (1 week), June (2 weeks), and September/October (3-4 weeks) for 26 nights.
The nighttime closures are primarily aimed at carrying out work in the traffic space: cleaning tunnel walls, lighting systems, SOS niches, ventilation channels, and other facilities. Minor structural repairs are carried out where necessary, and maintenance work on operational and safety systems is also performed, during which the condition of these equipment is assessed.
Gotthard Pass Closures
The Gotthard pass is usually closed during the winter period, from November to May, and it is open during the summer period, from May to November.
CUPRA 2025 Opening
Airolo and the Gotthard and Nufenen passes can be reached quickly via the Airolo/Passes preferential lane CUPRA without leaving the highway and without getting stuck in traffic jams.
The CUPRA lane is accessible only when the Gotthard Pass is open to traffic.
